Why Live Action Role Play (LARP)?

Imagination Adventures is a company that exists for the love of LARP and all it can teach us. Role-Playing has been scientifically proven to be an effective way to learn. From student congress to mock trials to empathy exercises, we see role play being used to educate children and teens on morals, laws, historical principals, and more. Our goals at Imagination Adventures are to provide a safe fictional setting for children and teens to explore concepts like teamwork, morality, critical thinking, negotiation, and more.

Each of our preplanned adventures, for camps and event packages, will contain puzzles, physical challenges, boffer (foam sword) games, and narrative based social challenges to create an action packed, super fun game, that is simultaneously supporting healthy development in soft skills that are necessary for real life experiences and situations. One Forbes’s article makes the claim that “Communication, empathy and interpersonal skills are intangible, but they play a vital role in ensuring that businesses function effectively. Even the most qualified employees will need soft skills to reach their full potential. In other words, hard skills may get you in the door, but soft skills will help you succeed.”

The opportunity to build these skills is vital, as a study by the Carnegie Foundation, Harvard, and Stanford research center found that success in the workplace is largely dependent on soft skills. These organizations cite a whopping 85% of job performance is due to communication, conflict resolution, and teamwork skills. We aim to support the practice of these skills in a fictional environment where mistakes have no real world consequences, allowing for full exploration of their actions.

“It’s like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.”
― Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind

Everyday Northwest Interview 2024

Imagination Adventures began from a lifelong love of storytelling and foam sword fencing on the part of Brynne Hunt, our owner and operating manager. From early childhood she could be found with her family at Renaissance Festivals, theatre showings, and libraries, absorbing all of the fantasy adventures she could get her hands on. As a child, she would lead her siblings and various playmates through imaginary games where they were the heroes saving the day. The stories she experienced shaped her personality, morals, and interests from a young age, which later expanded into table top role-playing games, an ongoing acting and performance career of 15 years, and, eventually, she found Live Action Role-Play.

She grew up in a small tightknit community that relied on their older teens to support parents through babysitting and entertaining children at community events. These experiences, coupled with being part of a large family with children of all ages around, has given her lifelong experience with childcare.

Her Interest in LARP, coupled with a long background of childcare and nannying, made it a natural step to put those interests together to create an imaginative play environment that will support the learning of teamwork skills, critical thinking, and other soft skills that are vital to our ever changing world.
